52 things kids need from their dad...

I heard about this book today. Our local radio station ...The fish Atlanta will discuss this book tomorrow with the author.    http://www.thefishatlanta.com/Article.asp?id=1665902

Losing my dad at an early age has always made me observe others who still have their dads...many times watching with envy. Just to have him in my life would be so great. Why is it we sometimes have to lose loved ones in order to appreciate them? None of us are guaranteed tomorrow!

Thirty one years ago this month... I lost my dad in an automobile accident. Many kids lose their parents everyday. I sometimes wonder how different my life would have been if he were here today. What kind of impact would he have had on my life?

I often wonder if dads really know what an important role they play in the lives of their children.  Maybe your the only bread winner in your home...maybe you travel quite often...maybe your tired when you get home from a long day at work...whatever your reason is for your lack of time with your kids... Listen up!....they are and will grow up. No sooner than a blink of an eye, they will be grown and gone. What will you say then?... I wish I had more time? Where have I been? Just like I should be saying...all those chores can wait...time with my kids can't! So, what about that ball game, nap and even that important phone call when your child looks at you and says "Dad come play with me!"? How important are your kids to you? Important enough to pull off the side of the road and catch fireflies with them for just a few minutes? It's the little things you do that will impact them for the rest of their lives...and yours! Don't waste a moment...you'll get that nap one day! And your kids...they will notice the sacrifice! So invest just a few minutes of you into their lives and impact them for a lifetime...You or them may not be here tomorrow!

Fireflies and Mason Jars...summer fun!!!

When I was a little girl, spending the night at my grandparent's house was the highlight of our summer. They lived on several acres with a small pond right in the heart of Tucker Georgia. Oh! the smell of fresh cut grass...thanks to my uncle who lived next door! We would always take a blanket out in the yard to lay in the grass and listen to the bull frogs. I think my grandmother did this so our grandaddy could listen to the ball game. What she didn't realise is ,that when she pulled out the mason jars for us to catch fireflies... the fun only just began. She ever so sweetly gave up her stash of jars...poking holes in the tops to allow those little creatures to breath. It always seemed like we had a jar full! Sometimes we would even let a few go inside my aunt's house...Oh the joys of spending time with our cousin and seeing what trouble we could stir up. Memories created in the most simplest of times.

It has been a few years since we have had more than just a few fireflies. Tonight we had so many that those flashing little bugs beckoned us to come outside and play. How could I resist creating memories with my children? This evening that smell of fresh cut grass came pouring in. All I could think of  was how we all would run around the yard chasing those crazy little flies with flashlights attached to their rears. So...as we grabbed the mason jars...I thought of my grandmother sitting with us all outside on that blanket right in the heart of Tucker Georgia. Oh how I wish my girls could have known her!  Now as I make memories with my girls...you will find me outside in the yard at night as they chase the fireflies...I'll be the one poking holes in my jars! And inside you will find my hubby...listening to the ball game! Go Braves!

Dear daughter....

My dear sweet Em....It only seems like yesterday that you were climbing fences with your two brothers. Oh the memories that you have made. Oh the memories you will be making.

Today as you step foot into this next phase of life...just think of all the memories you have ahead of you! And as you say your I do's to the blessing God has sent you....I will be watching in awe of what God has done . You are a testimony of how God will bless you when you choose to obey and surrender your will to His. I amazed at how quickly Eric came into your life at that moment!

Emily today will be filled with tears...some sad some joyful. The sad is because I feel like I blinked...you grew up way too fast! The joyful is because I am so very proud of the young woman you have become.I can't wait to see all that God has planned for you! You are truly a gift...a very big blessing to me! I am proud to call you my daughter! At 6 o'clock this evening I will then call you Emily Jackson...but you will always be a Holcombe. I love you my daughter! Have fun on your wedding day!!!!

She's gone......

You became my grandmother the day my mom said "I do!" You embraced us as though we were your grandchildren. Although you only had 1 child...you left this world with 7 grandchildren and 23 great grandkids...1 great great and 1 great great on the way.  Grun we will miss you...and your key lime pies!

This week will be filled with many emotions. As we are finishing up wedding plans...we are also planning a funeral. I really hate this...I feel so torn! As we celebrate the marriage of our daughter this week... we will also be celebrating the life of a very special lady.  We live and we die....blessed be the name of the Lord! Our days are numbered...Only our maker knows how many. Although the next few days will be bittersweet...I know I serve a God who is filled with compassion and will supply all that I need this week.

Choosing to live each day as though it were your last! All those little things that would normally bother you...they suddenly become insignificant. Lord help me to live each day to the fullest...never wasting a moment to love and be loved...living my life with NO regrets!
